Science and research volunteers conduct animal enrichment and animal watch and scientific procedures such as water testing. Enrichment volunteers are involved in the creation of enrichment devices for our animals and animal watch volunteers monitor Zoo animal behaviour.

Animal Enrichment & Behavioural Observation

These volunteers provide assistance with the basic technical functions of water testing, animal enrichment and assisted animal watch.

Volunteers can then be trained to carry out more advanced tasks such as independent behavioural observations.

Volunteers can also be trained to assist staff with higher level research on a project basis.

Is this right for me?

You need to have keen observation skills, an interest in animals, an ongoing willingness to learn and for the most part enjoy working alone. A decent level of fitness is required as you will be walking around the grounds on a regular basis.

Animal Enrichment Volunteers need to enjoy problem solving and lateral thinking.  It is preferable that they have food preparation, practical craft and carpentry skills. Power tools are used regularly.

Behavioural Observation Volunteers need to be able to work autonomously and enjoy their own company. They need to have patience, good concentration and a methodical mind. They work outdoors in all types of weather and at odd times of the day. A flexible schedule is preferred as observations are often arranged at short notice.

Minimum commitment: 12 months, once per fortnight (negotiable), once per week preferred. 

Financial contribution: $25 joining fee & complusary Zoofriends membership.

NB: Please do not join Zoofriensd until you have sucessfully secured a position, as once sucessful membership will be at the discounted rate of $79

Training

All science and research volunteers are required to complete a one day induction and ongoing training and assessment, training can be on the job and 'lecture style'.
